So you’ve reached the point where you can afford to quit your job and blog for a living? It can be a challenge to stay productive when you first start working from home.

Many of you will find it’s much easier to be productive while working from home than it was in the office. But if you’re struggling, these strategies and techniques can help you maximize your productivity from the comfort of your own home.

It’s all about replacing the structure of the office routine without introducing all those distractions, like co-workers bugging you anytime they feel like chatting. Once you find the home routine for you, you’ll be amazed how much you get done.

Creating a Productive Workspace in Your Home

Setting aside a dedicated and productive workspace can make a significant difference in your productivity. Here are a few tips to help you design a good workspace:

Designate a specific area in your home for work

It’s essential to have a specific area for work to separate your personal and professional life. Choose a quiet corner or room in your home where you can focus without distractions.

A separate home office room is ideal, especially if you have Zoom meetings or phone calls – for you and the rest of your household. But many of us don’t have a space for that.

In that case, pick a corner of a room that isn’t used by anyone else during the day, such as a bedroom. At the very least, try to have a desk that’s just for work.

If you’re very short or tall, you may want to consider ditching the desk altogether. I’m short and have had way fewer aches and pains sitting in a comfy chair with my laptop and a table next to me than I did in an office where ergonomic experts had supposedly set everything just right for me.

My favorite things to actually spend money on:

  • Good chair. It’s hard to say what this is for everyone. I’ve bought $300 office chairs that hurt me. I’m happy with an Ikea POÄNG chair and ottoman. You might prefer an overstuffed chair.
  • Comfortable mouse. Mousing can cause RSI and back and neck pain, so I look for ones that work for me. This does not necessarily mean an expensive “ergonomic mouse.” I love my Logitech M720 Triathlon.

Creating clear boundaries will help you maintain your productivity and avoid distractions. But remember to be patient with small children and pets who interrupt.

You may sometimes need to find motivation by connecting with other bloggers or participating in online communities where you can share your experiences and learn from others.

This can break up your workday into chunks of deep focus followed by a rewarding break. It can almost game your brain into enjoying work more. Try it to see if it helps you maintain concentration and avoid burnout.

Time blocking is another technique that involves allocating specific time blocks for different tasks or activities, allowing you to manage your time effectively and avoid multitasking.

  1. Establish communication channels: Set up regular communication channels with your team, whether it’s through email, video conferencing, or messaging apps. Having clear and open lines of communication will ensure everyone is on the same page and reduce stress levels.
  2. Use collaboration tools: Make use of collaboration tools and project management software to streamline workflows and facilitate collaboration. Tools like Clickup, Slack, Trello, or Asana can help you and your team stay organized and work together efficiently.
  3. Regular check-ins: Schedule regular check-in meetings or stand-ups with your team to discuss progress, address any questions or concerns, and ensure everyone is aligned on tasks and timelines.
  4. Clear and concise communication: When communicating with your team, be clear, concise, and to the point. Avoid unnecessary jargon or lengthy explanations to ensure effective communication.
  5. Active listening: Practice active listening skills when participating in team meetings or discussions. Show interest, ask questions, and engage with your team members to foster effective collaboration.
  6. Provide and request regular updates: Keep your team informed about your progress and any relevant updates. Likewise, request regular updates from your team members to stay informed about their progress and ensure tasks are moving forward.

Balancing Work and Personal Life Productivity

When you’re working where you live, it can be challenging to find a balance between work and personal life, as the lines between the two can easily blur.

Stepping away from work even for a couple of minutes every hour can recharge your energy levels and help you feel more motivated. It will increase productivity when you get back to work.
