Genesis is an old standby WordPress theme framework developed by StudioPress, a well-respected name in the WordPress community. It’s still good, and despite the sales tactics on the website, you do not have to sign up to WPEngine hosting to buy and use these themes.

Note that Genesis is actually a framework. You can use it alone, but it’s designed to be used with one of their many free or paid child themes. This puts it somewhere between GP and Kadence in terms of how easy it is to get it to look how you want: if you like one of the child themes and don’t want to change a thing, just follow the instructions!

If you want flexibility and features, Kadence. It has a lot of options built in, especially in the paid version.

If you want clean and minimalist, and aren’t adding a lot of features or are willing to take the time or hire someone to add them, GeneratePress is a great option. (If you see a child theme you like, that might be all you need.)

If you see a Genesis child theme you like, you can’t beat it. If you see one that’s almost perfect and you want to tweak it, you might be in for a surprisingly frustrating mystery to figure out.
